Ready, Set, Action

don't you just love summer?
I spent today inside hiding from the terrible snowy tundra that is Rexburg. Keeping me company were these shots from a boating trip last summer.
My bishopric took just a few of us because there was a ward service project and we were the only ones to show up. Funny enough, the service project itself was incredibley fun [pulling tares from a wheat field] in a gorgeous environment [sunny evening in ririe]. If only I had my camera then!

Anyway, back on task...
These are freeze action shots, but they also demonstrate a technique called spot metering. It was very sunny this day and all I has was a little point-and-shoot. Every photo was blown out. The first half of these shots I wanted to create a shadow effect so I actually metered the photo on the sun. The second half of the shots were metered on the horizon line and the have very vibrant colors. None of these photos are edited.

More information about spot metering...[skip this if you just want to see the photos]! Exposure, by definition, is the determination of the amount of light to reach the film in order to produce a correct image. In other words, to have a correctly exposed image we have to have the exact amount of light entering the camera in order to register the correct image on film. Remember that light is the most important element of any photograph. Without it we have nothing. With too much of it you have an overexposed and washed-out image. With too little of it you have a dark and underexposed image. In neither case can we have an image that would truly represent the subject." [http://spotmetering.com/spwhy.htm]

The first and last shots are my favorite.
